Our Midwifery Services
We are a diverse team of primary health care providers who specialize in low-risk, healthy pregnancies, and our services are fully funded by the Ministry of Health and/or OHIP.
Midwifery care is free to all Ontario residents, even if you do not have health care coverage.
The comprehensive care we provide means we’re there for you and your baby during pregnancy, labour and birth, as well as 6 weeks postpartum.
We are also strong advocates of informed choice and therefore strive to equip you with the information you need to make the health care decisions that are best for you.
Midwives are the only health-care providers who offer their clients a choice of birthplace as our midwives attend births at home or in hospital.
During your pregnancy, your midwife will talk to you about your options, will answer all of your questions and provide you with the information you need to make an informed decision that is right for you.
Choosing midwives means that you do not need to have an obstetrician, as we are able to provide all of the standard prenatal blood work, ultrasounds and medications required during pregnancy and postpartum for low-risk individuals. If complications do arise, we consult and/or refer you to an obstetrician as needed.
Choosing a midwife also means that in addition to your prenatal and postnatal clinic appointments, you will have access to a midwife 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, to assist with any urgent concerns that may arise during your care.
Your health and that of your baby are our number one priority, which is why we take the time to understand your health history, as well as answer the many questions you may have about your pregnancy, your baby, or your body.
This is also why our appointments last up to 30 minutes, to address your needs and provide comprehensive care. Our clients frequently tell us it is one reason they value our care.
During regularly scheduled visits to the midwifery clinic, midwives provide:
- physical assessments
- prenatal education
- informed choice discussions
- decision support
Physical examinations include:
- taking clients’ blood pressure
- blood and urine testing
- measuring growth
- listening to the fetal heart rate
Appointments typically take place in the midwives’ clinic. If you are planning a home birth, a midwife will visit your home to become familiar with your birth setting.
How Does Midwifery Care Work?
At our practice, we’re here to provide exceptional midwifery care that centres around you. Our dedicated team includes registered midwives and enthusiastic midwifery students who specialize in caring for low-risk pregnancies.
Throughout your pregnancy, you will be cared for by a team of two to four midwives. All midwives are trained to the same high standards in Ontario; each brings a unique breadth of experiences. We feel that a team-based approach ensures you receive a well-rounded and personalized experience.
Monthly Connections
Prenatal appointments take place every 4 to 6 weeks in the first and second trimesters; every two weeks from 34 to 38 weeks. As the big day draws near, our meetings will become more frequent, happening every 1 to 2 weeks. You can expect each session to last between 20 to 30 minutes. Some clients will need to be seen more often as needed.
Supportive Presence
Your family members and/or the people who make up your support system, as defined by you, are encouraged and welcome to attend appointments with you.
There is no charge to have a midwife if you are a resident of Ontario, as the costs of care are covered by the provincial healthcare system.
After Your Little One Arrives
First Weeks
We’ll come to see you at the hospital, your home, or the clinic during the first week after birth, making sure you’re supported and comfortable wherever you are.
Clinic Connections
Beyond that, we’re thrilled to welcome you and your baby to our clinic at around 2, 4, and 6 weeks post-birth.
For those moments that require urgent attention or when labour happens, rest assured that a midwife is just a page away, 24/7.
Moreover, our comprehensive care extends to include routine pregnancy lab tests and ultrasounds, all of which can be ordered by a midwife. We’re here to provide not only medical care but also unwavering support and guidance tailored to your unique needs.
