Newborn Care

Regardless of where you give birth, you and your newborn will have about 4 – 6 midwifery appointments during the six weeks following the birth.

Midwives monitor both your and your baby’s health and provide infant feeding support.

Newborn and postpartum care is an aspect of our care that our clients are enthusiastic about! New parents are often worried about what is normal vs not normal. One of our primary goals is to help our clients feel confident and knowledgeable in their first weeks of life with their new baby.

Midwives are primary health care providers for your low-risk newborn.

When caring for your baby, midwives will perform newborn screening for metabolic disorders as well as physical examinations, including:

  • checking weight
  • measuring length
  • listening to the baby’s heart and lungs
  • looking at how the umbilical stump is healing
  • Check their reflexes
  • Assess their developmental milestones

We work closely with pediatricians too and can refer to them directly if the need arises.

Once your newborn’s care is complete with us at 6 weeks, you would need to book with a general practitioner/family doctor, nurse practitioner, or paediatrician when your newborn is 8 weeks old for ongoing care and the scheduled vaccines, if planned.
